Brave woman my sister. She lives in a house which last year, during a spectacular storm had the roof blow off. So she, hubby, and their six children, two cats, two dogs, two parrots and an assortment of smaller pets moved twice in the last year. Now back in their happy home, it wasn’t nearly madness enough but the younger of the two cats brought four sweet little kittens into the world and my sister’s house. So endearing are these little marvels that my son-in-law cannot bear to part with them.

Adventures in Hamsterdam October 4, 2007

This is Jeszter, he lives in a cage we call Hamsterdam. He shares a flat with two humans, a dog, and three cats. Mostly Jester stays in his cage, but, once a day, the female human comes over and takes all of Hamsterdam to the kitchen.

This is when Jeszter’s normally dull life becomes an adventure. Tiggy, the oldest of three tabbies knows that the cage is being cleaned and is already waiting on the kitchen counter. Nothing gets by her. This alerts the German shepherd dog, Belvedere, and he’s always ready to guard the most defenseless, in this case the hamster.

Now jeszter is particularly fearless and he likes playing games with the cat. Sometimes she’s looking for him in the cage when she really should be looming right under her own fuzzy body. She’s a good old gall with a trong maternal instinct, and even though she hunts rodents when called to, she only snuggles and huddles with Jeszter, besides Belvedere is always nearby and would show the cat the riot act.

When not hiding, and toying with the cat, Jeszter takes walks along the counters, over the female’s hobby table – my goodness, that woman’s into everything. Eventually Jester ends up at the sink. You wouldn’t think a Hamster likes water that much, but he does. The tap very often drips and if the dishes are stacked right he can get good and wet, while housekeeping is looking after cleaning up his housing. He likes to be dried with a sift cloth and after enjoying a human cuddling session happily goes back into his cage, until tomorrow that is.
